James H. Bradd papers, 1864.

Contains information pertaining to the following military unit: 13th Iowa Infantry Regiment, XVII (17th) U.S. Army Corps. General description of the collection: The James H. Bradd papers include his diary (March 3-December 23, 1864). The account begins in detail with his return from veteran furlough, April 18, and covers his service in the field until July 22. Most of that period, he was with his regiment, but from May 25 to June 30, he was commissary sergeant at XVII (17th) Corps Headquarters. He was captured at the Battle of Atlanta and imprisioned in Andersonville, July 29-September 12; and Florence, September 14-December 8. On December 11, he was exchanged at Charleston, and the end of the year found him at Camp Parole, Annapolis. His journal offers a graphic account of service in the field and prison life. It also refers to recruiting of the Confederate Foreign Legion among the captives at Florence.
